GENESIS
A catastrophic accident at Saint Dorsey: humanity tried to safely contain a newly discovered element it barely understood and unknowingly created the conditions for disaster.
Genesis is an accident.
No alien force, hostile nation, missile, terrorist, thief, villain, deliberate weapons test, or superhuman experiment causes Genesis. Nobody is targeting Saint Dorsey.
The disaster begins because Hampton Dynamics is handling HVA-01—later named Abyron / Ax-126—only hours into humanity’s relationship with the element. Reasonable safety procedures accidentally create the exact physical conditions the material needs to become dangerous.
A specialized ocean division, not Hampton headquarters.
Saint Dorsey is a Hampton Dynamics division focused heavily on sonar, deep-ocean exploration, ocean mapping, marine robotics, undersea discovery, and technology for reaching parts of Earth’s oceans conventional institutions have barely explored.
Hampton is already one of the world’s most advanced technology companies. Abyron does not create that reputation; it becomes the holy-grail discovery of a company that was already building advanced exosuits, armor, robotics, weapons, satellite systems, EMP technology, and high-energy machinery.
Genesis occurs very early after the first Abyron discovery voyage. Saint Dorsey is not holding a giant premium stockpile for a planned experiment.
The road to Genesis begins at the ocean floor.
The Saint Dorsey expedition discovers HVA-01 in a deep-ocean volcanic and hydrothermal environment: downward-moving bubbles, a nearly invisible gel-like membrane coating volcanic rock, and liquid that reveals itself mainly through glossy refractive distortion under ROV light.
During ascent, the recovered liquid unintentionally undergoes the first volumetric bloom: very high starting pressure gives way to gradual decompression while the sample is rapidly cooled inside a confined, oxygen-trapped chamber. The liquid expands, crystallizes into bright-orange ceramic, and abruptly changes its effective weight response.
The resulting submarine failure forces the crew back toward depth, where the ceramic reverts to liquid. The shattered containment system appears coated in more liquid Abyron than the crew originally collected.
The recovered sample returns to Saint Dorsey.
The expedition originated from Saint Dorsey, its employees made the discovery, and the division already has the oceanographic equipment and expertise needed to preserve an unusual deep-sea sample. HVA-01 is therefore brought back there for study.
Knowledge remains tightly held but not part of a giant international conspiracy: the discovery crew, relevant researchers and leadership, necessary technical staff, trusted Hampton executives, security, and legal personnel are among the small group likely to know.
Mark Hampton is in Washington state during Genesis. He is not aboard the discovery vessel and is not at Saint Dorsey during the malfunction. Hillfred is the major Hampton figure called toward the site, but Genesis occurs before he arrives. After the catastrophe, the emergency exclusion perimeter prevents him from receiving immediate access.
A manageable-looking leak becomes the wrong kind of safety problem.
A damaged or compromised seal slowly allows pressure to bleed from the HVA-01 containment system. Saint Dorsey’s automated systems detect falling pressure, temperature irregularity, containment instability, and sample movement or volume change.
The facility reacts reasonably for an unknown hazardous material: it rapidly cools the sample and attempts to stabilize containment. For Abyron, those actions complete the bloom combination—declining pressure, rapid cooling, trapped oxygen, and enclosure.
The nearly invisible liquid expands and crystallizes into bright-orange ceramic inside the facility.
The containment assembly becomes a structural failure.
As the ceramic forms, its effective weight response changes sharply and unevenly. The problem is not simply that “the rock becomes heavier.” The rig experiences a sudden change in load distribution that stresses support mounts, structural anchors, coolant lines, power conduits, and nearby machinery.
Anchors snap, mounts bend, coolant and electrical systems are damaged, and automated safety hardware continues fighting to stabilize a structure whose load behavior it does not understand.
The failing rig reaches Hampton’s power infrastructure.
Saint Dorsey’s sonar, underwater communications, robotics, submersibles, mapping systems, and expedition hardware require unusually powerful energy storage and distribution. The facility uses advanced high-density, pulsed-energy capacitor-style systems rather than needing to be a nuclear site.
The shifting Abyron rig damages nearby high-energy infrastructure, exposing the ceramic to electrical and electromagnetic discharge, heat, structural impact, pressure disruption, thermal shock, and mechanical flexion.
Ceramic Abyron is extraordinarily resistant to heat and penetration, but concentrated blunt force and structural flexion are major weaknesses. Hairline fractures begin leaking dark-orange, Abyronically radiative Ax-126 vapor.
For three seconds, everyone can believe the disaster already happened.
The damaged Hampton energy system suffers a catastrophic discharge into fractured ceramic Abyron amid oxygen, vaporized metals, electronics, composites, debris, heat, and pressure shock.
A major conventional explosion tears through the Saint Dorsey facility, killing and injuring people, destroying equipment, damaging communications, and spreading debris.
That explosion is not Genesis.
Explosion. One. Two. Three.
The remaining ceramic Ax-126 lattice holds together briefly while absorbing extraordinary energy.
Approximately three seconds after the first explosion, the lattice enters catastrophic cascading failure.
The delay is hard canon and one of the defining beats of the event.
A state change, not simply a second explosion.
The remaining Abyron vaporizes, becomes highly excited and partially ionized, mixes with vaporized Hampton technology and structural material, carries enormous electromagnetic energy, and becomes biologically catalytic.
Normal gaseous Ax-126 is dark orange. Genesis-state Abyron is brilliant bright orange because the element is in an extraordinary energetic state and actively emitting intense orange light.
The vapor is orange. Its advancing boundary appears nearly black.
The phase-transition boundary absorbs and distorts enough visible light to look almost black from a distance. Behind and within that boundary is brilliant orange Genesis-state vapor.
The defining visual remains a nearly black advancing edge followed by a dense bright-orange Abyron cloud.
Saint Dorsey disappears into contaminated haze.
Genesis-state Abyron remains unusually dense and surface-bound. It moves through streets, buildings, facilities, terrain, and low atmospheric space rather than immediately rising away.
Outside responders cannot safely enter. Authorities establish an exclusion and quarantine perimeter because the atmosphere, Abyronic radiation, structural damage, and biological effects are unknown.
The bright-orange cloud gradually loses energy, disperses, and settles. It is fully gone after approximately 14 hours. Saint Dorsey remains under controlled exclusion for approximately two days while contamination testing, search and recovery, medical screening, structural inspection, investigation, and controlled reentry continue.
The external pillars are known. The lived experience is not one clean timeline.
Genesis leaves room for different survivor perspectives, isolated incidents, contradictory memories, delayed manifestations, and events occurring in different parts of the island. The public record does not pretend every minute inside the orange cloud is universally understood.
Outside Saint Dorsey, the immediate question is simply: what happened?
362 people die.
Genesis is a major human catastrophe, not merely a superhero-origin spectacle. The established death toll is 362.
Survivors are medically screened after the event, but routine testing does not reveal a reliable marker that identifies true Ascendants. There is no simple “Ascendant blood test,” and the altered survivors are not discovered as one obvious group when the cloud clears.
A small, finite group tied only to the original Genesis event.
True Ascendants belong specifically to Genesis. Their exact total is not established as public in-universe knowledge, and the public site does not present a fixed count as something governments, Hampton, media, or civilians automatically know.
Manifestation timing varies dramatically. An Ascendant can display an impossible ability immediately, hours later, days later, weeks later, or months later. Some manifestations are dramatic; others are subtle, hidden, misunderstood, or initially mistaken for something else.
Later artificial Abyron subjects, supersoldiers, enhanced humans, mutants, technological humans, magic users, aliens, and other anomalies are not automatically Ascendants.
The moment supplies the need. The person supplies the interpretation. Genesis supplies the scale.
Genesis power formation is influenced by biology, neurology, personality, emotional state, immediate circumstances, survival priorities, ingrained behavior, and physical actions during exposure. Together, those factors shape an Ascendant’s underlying physical domain.
Potential domains can include plasma, force generation, spatial displacement, kinetic-event translation, vector manipulation, electromagnetic interaction, gravitic phenomena, matter preservation, and other high-order physical concepts.
The first manifested ability is not necessarily the true scope of the domain. Apparent strength may reveal force generation; teleportation may reveal spatial manipulation; electricity may reveal electromagnetic interaction. Ascendant ceilings, growth rates, mastery, creativity, control, and willingness to train vary enormously.
The Ascendants are recognized gradually, not all at once.
The first publicly undeniable Ascendant has not been locked to a specific character. The broad historical pattern is that a Saint Dorsey survivor eventually does something publicly impossible, early explanations point to fake footage or Hampton technology, and later anomalous people are also traced back to the disaster.
Only then does the wider world begin to understand that Genesis changed some survivors. The exact number remains unknown to the public.
The name is historical, not something shouted during the disaster.
In the immediate aftermath, the event is described more plainly as the Saint Dorsey Incident, Saint Dorsey Disaster, or Dorsey catastrophe.
As altered survivors become undeniable, Saint Dorsey is described as the genesis point of the change. The phrase catches on through scientific, government, media, and public discussion, eventually shortening to the Genesis Event—and then simply Genesis.
No giant malicious cover-up is required.
Hampton Dynamics ultimately provides substantial transparency about the core cause: the company discovered a new element, barely understood it, and suffered a catastrophic containment failure while attempting to handle it safely.
Transparency does not erase responsibility. Hampton faces investigation, liability, regulation, government scrutiny, survivor and family claims, and major legal and financial consequences. The company provides substantial compensation and long-term support to families affected by the 362 deaths.
The original intact sample does not survive Genesis.
The useful intact HVA-01 material at Saint Dorsey is destroyed or transformed during the catastrophe. What remains includes altered particulate material later known as Abyron Powder.
Abyron Powder is not intact Abyron: its coherent lattice has been permanently shattered. The derivative can temporarily amplify existing biological and superhuman systems, but cannot make a new true Ascendant. The names “Dust” and, in some public reporting, “Genesis Dust” refer to the same underlying material. Explore the complete Abyron Powder record →
Genesis sends Hampton back to the ocean.
Hampton does not return to manufacture superheroes. It returns because the original intact sample is gone, the remaining powder raises more questions than answers, and the company needs another sample of HVA-01.
Improved detection technology eventually reveals that the original glossy membrane was only a trace of a much larger natural phenomenon. Hampton discovers major volcanic chamber and reservoir systems—approximately five known systems become the working canon—and Abyron changes from mysterious sample to strategic global resource.
That post-Genesis discovery opens the door to Hampton manufacturing, military demand, foreign purchasing, research, advanced armor, energy systems, and eventually black-market diversion.
The island recovers—and Hampton becomes far more powerful there.
Saint Dorsey does not remain permanently quarantined, abandoned, apocalyptic, or an orange wasteland. The island largely returns to functioning life while living with the memory and consequences of the catastrophe.
Hampton rebuilds and massively expands its presence into the Dorsey New General Facility, a major Abyron processing, manufacturing, research, logistics, and strategic center. The Hampton workforce grows from roughly 400 employees before Genesis to roughly 4,000 after the rebuild.
The result is intentionally contradictory: Genesis is a defining tragedy and also the beginning of an enormous economic and industrial boom for Saint Dorsey.
Genesis is foundational, not universal.
Genesis opens the modern superhuman era and helps trigger an Abyron arms race, Hampton’s post-event expansion, and a transformed scientific and geopolitical world. It does not explain every hero, villain, alien, magic system, artifact, experiment, mutation, martial artist, or independent power source in OldRoot.
The exact first publicly revealed Ascendant, final creator-side Ascendant roster, individual survivor experiences, government quarantine structure, media timeline, settlement details, exact post-Genesis reserve tonnage, and exact reservoir locations remain intentionally open.
