AFTERMARK
Nicolás “Nico” Vélez Rosado
A normal human carrying one profoundly abnormal law of physics: the environment remembers what he did there.
Overview
Nicolás “Nico” Vélez Rosado is Aftermark, a Puerto Rican hero operating from Santurce, San Juan. He is a human permanently altered by an external spatial anomaly. Aftermark can perform a physical action, leave that action temporarily stored at the exact location where it occurred, and later trigger it one additional time.
He does not create clones, holograms, ghosts, or conventional kinetic blasts. The motion itself is preserved. A punch can remain in a doorway, a jump over a rooftop gap, or a shove in a hallway. The longer Nico operates inside the same environment, the more dangerous that environment becomes.
Biography
Nico was born and raised in Santurce. His mother, Marisol Rosado, works in medical-clinic administration; his father, Rafael Vélez, formerly worked as an industrial electrician before moving toward smaller contract work. Nico’s younger sister, Elena Vélez Rosado, is one of his closest relationships.
As a young adult, Nico entered the elevator and vertical-transport trade. By age 27 he is a capable technician trusted with difficult mechanical calls involving elevators, freight lifts, old systems, service shafts, and hard-to-access building spaces. He genuinely likes the work.
Origin
At approximately age 23, Nico and senior technician Tomás “Tomi” Santiago responded to an older Santurce building whose elevator was stopping below the lowest documented floor. Their investigation led to an undocumented service level and a heavy steel door that had been welded shut from the outside.
Beyond the door was an old concrete chamber that appeared physically mundane but retained physical movement. Actions performed inside the room could occur again several seconds later even after the person or object was no longer performing them. No visible duplicate appeared; the path, direction, speed, and force of the movement itself repeated.
The chamber destabilized. Nico got Tomi toward safety, remained trapped, and eventually used one of the chamber’s repeated movements deliberately to help himself escape. The anomaly then underwent a catastrophic spatial failure. Afterward, the chamber appeared normal. Nico later discovered that the phenomenon had become anchored to him.
Becoming Aftermark
Nico did not immediately become a superhero. He first experimented with the anomaly and learned its rules. His path into heroism began through repeated intervention in dangerous situations rather than a single ceremonial decision. By Genesis, Aftermark has operated for approximately four years and is an established hero rather than a rookie.
Personality
Nico is restless, social, observant, competitive, stubborn, and strongly present-minded. He naturally notices movement, positioning, exits, pathways, timing, and how people physically occupy space. He talks easily, maintains a real civilian life, and is not intended as a permanently brooding loner.
He has a dry, quick sense of humor and enjoys basketball, dominoes, races, contests, and dumb bets. Losing itself does not bother him as much as performing below his own standard. When something fails, his instinct is to want another attempt.
Nico dislikes excessive indecision and strongly dislikes pity. His decisiveness can be useful under pressure, but the same trait can become recklessness or overcommitment to a plan that previously worked.
Powers & Abilities
Motion imprinting
Nico can store physical actions he personally performs. Stored actions remain fixed in the exact place where they were created, retain the original movement’s path and force, last for 90 seconds at full effectiveness, and can be triggered once before they are consumed.
He can maintain a maximum of eight stored actions simultaneously. The power cannot copy another person’s movement, bullets, explosions, vehicles, or unrelated environmental motion. It is not broad kinetic-energy manipulation.
Movement reuse
Nico can place himself inside his own previously stored movements and reuse jumps, lateral bursts, redirects, and similar actions for short supernatural-looking mobility sequences. This does not grant flight, teleportation, or super-speed.
Spatial awareness
Nico possesses a narrow intrinsic awareness of his active stored actions: where they are relative to him, whether they still exist, whether they have been consumed, and roughly how close they are to expiration. He does not see a HUD or literal timer.
Simultaneous activation strain
Two simultaneous actions are manageable. Three are painful. Four or more can produce severe vertigo, vomiting, spatial confusion, and possible blackout. Heavy overuse can make it difficult for Nico to distinguish his current body position from the remembered locations of stored motions.
Human physiology
Nico remains physically human. The anomaly did not grant superhuman strength, durability, healing, running speed, bullet resistance, enhanced lifespan, or a general super-senses package. He can be stabbed, shot, concussed, break bones, suffer organ damage, and die from ordinary lethal trauma.
Combat Style
Boxing is Aftermark’s foundational fighting language. Footwork, pivots, slips, hooks, body shots, combinations, efficient mechanics, and precise positioning directly improve the quality of the movements he can store.
His battlefield changes as a fight continues. Nico seeds doorways, halls, rooms, rooftops, stairwells, and alleys with delayed attacks, stored evasions, movement paths, and overlapping strike zones. Opponents eventually have to account for both Nico’s current body and actions he performed earlier.
Geometry-rich environments favor him. Large open areas reduce his ability to manipulate positioning, and changing environments can disrupt setups because stored actions do not adapt or home. His human durability and vulnerability to firearms remain serious limitations.
Equipment
Aftermark wears a low-bulk mobility suit built around freedom of movement, abrasion protection, grip, flexibility, and precise body positioning. His palette combines charcoal, graphite, and smoke gray with restrained sea-glass teal or oxidized-turquoise accents.
The suit uses a deliberate asymmetric displaced-path language suggesting trajectory, movement, and a secondary mark left behind. It includes a fitted full-face mask with pale off-white lenses, sleek reinforced gloves, and high-traction athletic footwear. It is not heavy armor and does not make Nico bulletproof.
Nico relies on his temporal abilities, equipment suited to movement, and physical skill rather than a weapon arsenal; he does not carry a firearm as standard hero equipment.
Relationships
Marisol Rosado
Nico’s mother is organized, direct, affectionate without babying him, and particularly good at recognizing when he is lying.
Rafael Vélez
Nico’s father is a former industrial electrician who helped make Nico comfortable around tools and machinery. Their relationship is loving and functional even when they argue about unnecessary risk.
Elena Vélez Rosado
Nico’s younger sister, age 22, is one of his closest relationships and is unimpressed by any attempt he makes to seem mysterious or intimidating.
Tomás “Tomi” Santiago
Tomi, 34, is a senior elevator technician and older mentor figure who was present during the origin incident. Nico got him toward safety before the chamber’s collapse. Tomi knows something impossible occurred and knows Nico should not have survived normally.
